Attasalina
b. 1977, Venice, California
lives and works in Santa Fe, NM

My work moves from traditional photographic printing to textural and dimensional mixed media. These works incorporate black and white film photographs with layers of paper and acrylic mediums creating window like portals in the fabric of spacetime.

Past and future intersect in this examination of time and consciousness through the juxtaposition of accurate visions of the future with traumatic memory loss of lived experiences.

Freed From Rage and Sorrow documents my investigation into the nature of reality as it interrogates personal and historical narratives of survival, land and identity.

ABOUT

Born into the epicenter of the consciousness movement in a house on North Venice Blvd. in Venice Beach, California in 1977 and raised between Los Angeles and the wilderness of the Los Padres National Forest north of the Ojai Valley, Attasalina's art is a fusion of the urban experience and the insights afforded by the natural world.

Focusing on issues of identity, visionary experiences and inner states as physical relationship with environment, her work is often in the subtle way of a person who has had to keep their life and their knowledge secret.

In 1999 at the age of twenty two, Attasalina abandoned her pursuit of a science degree focusing on bio psychology and accepted a full time position managing a photography studio with photo lab and custom darkroom. Having taken a couple photography classes as well as other art curriculum during college, she had film developing and darkroom printing ability. Enthusiastically pursuing every opportunity, within a short time she was photographing portraits and events and exhibiting her work.

Attasalina’s exhibitions have been mixed media, landscape, nude and documentary projects. She has been published in the Ojai Valley News, Ventura County Star, Newsweek and the Ojai Calendar Project and shown at the Los Angeles Art Show presented by the Lucie Foundation and The Month of Photography Los Angeles at Bergamot Station. She has presented at Brooks Institute about writing as it relates to visual artists, served as juror for the photography branch of the Ojai Art Center and collaborated with the Ojai Arts Commission and local organizations, businesses and galleries to re establish an arts grant.

After over a decade in photography, Attasalina became disabled due to multiple conditions and could no longer continue her professional career. She officially closed her studio in 2012 and began a long period of severe disability. Using what she was going through, she continued her practice; delving deep into her own life experience and uncovering mysteries to facilitate healing.

After significant recovery, Attasalina is re-emerging with her autobiographical project Freed From Rage and Sorrow.
